For Day Twenty-Five of 30 Days, 30 Ways, let’s learn the Pinwheel Bun!  This bun is a combination of the classic Twisted Bun and Knotties.  You want to begin with wet, gelled hair, pulled into a ponytail in the high, low or side position.  Take a chunk of the ponytail and twist it to the end, then Read the rest of this entry

Day 24: The Combination Updo {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Twenty-Four: The Combination Updo
Skill To Learn: Braided Bangs + Twisted Ends + Curly Bun
Difficulty: Moderate to Complex
Time Commitment: 25 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 1 Fat Elastic, a Bunch of Bobbies

For Day Twenty-Four of 30 Days, 30 Ways, let’s attempt a Combination Updo!  We are going to combine Braided Bangs with the skills learned in Twisted Princess and pull it all together with a bun (you can do the Flippy Bun, Twisted BunMessy Bun, Braided Bun or Knotties).  The thing I am most excited about today is teaching all of my fellow, short-haired friends one of my secrets for pulling off so many of the upstyles taught here!   But we’ll get to that in a second… Read the rest of this entry

Day 23: The Braided Bun {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Twenty-Three: The Braided Bun
Skill To Learn: Just Combining Skills You’ve Already Learned
Difficulty: Easy Peasy
Time Commitment: 15 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 1 Fat Elastic, 1 Clear Elastic, 3 Bobbies

For Day Twenty-Three of 30 Days, 30 Ways, we’re going to do the super-girly Braided Bun!  This is as easy as one-tw0-three and can be styled very clean or wispy and whimsical.   If you style wet with gel, you will achieve the polished look as seen on Alayna below.  But if you fashion a looser braid on dry hair and allow strands to fall out as you wrap the bun, you will accomplish a subtler look.  The style will also change depending on where you position your bun.  (Go here for more on that…)  So here we go: Read the rest of this entry

Day 22: The Zig-Zag Part {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Twenty-Two: The Zig-Zag Part
Skill To Learn: Angular Parting With A Comb
Difficulty: Easy Peasy
Time Commitment: 3 Minutes + Style
What You Need: Gel, Comb + Style Tools

For Day Twenty-Two of 30 Days, 30 Ways, let’s learn the Zig-Zag Part!  If you learned the basics of parting way back when we started, then this should be relatively easy to master, but it is yet another way to add flair to the styles we are learning.  This fun, little trick can be done on a full, center or side parting and can be any size from micro-zigs to jumbo-zags!  You can incorporate the zig-zag when your tresses are down, half up with crossed bobbies, pulled into two buns or braided.   Take a look: Read the rest of this entry

Day 21: Two French Braids {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Twenty-One: Two French Braids
Skill To Learn: Parting and Left/Right Symmetrical Braiding
Difficulty: Moderate With A Practice Run
Time Commitment: 20 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 2-4 Clear Elastics

For Day Twenty-One of 30 Days, 30 Ways, let’s attempt to do the French Braid that you learned on Day Eight on two sides with a [blind] center part.   When we initially learned french braiding,  there was the simplifying option of anchoring your starter hair with an elastic.  The tutorials pictured here will not incorporate that, but you can still use that option if it will help you pull the style together until you get more familiar with it.  I am going to show you the basic double braid, but then I will show you some fun alternatives as well! Day 20: Twisty Rows {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Twenty: Twisty Rows
Skill To Learn: Twisting Along A Parting With Crossed Bobbies
Difficulty: Pretty Simple with a Practice Run!
Time Commitment: 20 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 6 Bobbies

 For Day Twenty of 30 Days, 30 Ways, I am going to build on the skill that you learned on Day Four: Twisted Bangs.  But for today’s version, we are going to twist and anchor the entire top portion of your head.   First, I will show you how to slice your partings horizontally (on my youngest daughter, Alayna Kate) and then we will see how the same style looks when styled with vertical partings (on my oldest daughter, Emilie).  Read the rest of this entry

Day 19: The Fishbone Braid {30 Days, 30 Ways}

Day Nineteen: The Fishbone Braid
Skill To Learn: Two Strand Braiding
Difficulty: Moderate (practicing on someone else is helpful the first time)
Time Commitment: 20 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 1 Clear Elastic

For Day Nineteen of 30 Days, 30 Ways, let’s learn the fishbone braid!  Let’s begin by clearing up some confustion: a fishbone is done with two strands, not three.  And it is really quite easy once your fingers get the feel of it!  You will have to work a little harder to keep your tensions even with a fishbone if you want it to look tight like my daughter Larken’s, but a loose fishbone is feminine and flirty too, if that’s what you’re going for.  So now let’s learn it together! For Day Eighteen of 30 Days, 30 Ways, I am going to show you how the Twisted Princess(Disclaimer: this isn’t actually a royal hairstyle, but doesn’t it look ever so Disney Princess?) For this style, you will want to dry and style your hair (curly, wavy or straight) and then mist the front parameter with water and reapply a little bit of gel so that you can reshape just those sections for the twist.  Read the rest of this entry

Day Sixteen:  Two Flippy Buns
Skill To Learn: Symmetry On Left And Right
Difficulty: Easy Peasy
Time Commitment: 10 Minutes
What You Need: Gel, Comb, 2 Fat Elastics or 2 Clear Elastics

For Day Sixteen of 30 Days, 30 Ways, we’re going to combine two skills that you have already learned: blind parting with the flippy bun that you learned on Day Eleven, to create two fun Flippy Buns on the side.  The thicker and/or longer your hair, the better this style looks, because you can not only get fullness out of the bottom loop, but also have fun with the ends that stick out the top!    Read the rest of this entry
